author's review:

this is one of my most favorite animes since it does not only feature tennis but as well as the lives and activities of junior high school students. the matches are great and you'll definitely be amazed when you get to see their tennis techniques. a genre of action/adventure/comedy and a bit of teenage romance, this anime is going to drive you crazy and once you've started watching it you'll definitely crave for more. It is generally a shounen but i think it is suitable for everybody who likes anime and tennis.

001. A Prince Appears

001. A Prince Appears

In the train, 12-yrs-old Sakuno Riyuzaki, is almost being hitted by a swaying tennis racket as its holder, the 16-yrs-old Sasabe, tries to brag to his friends about the correct gripping styles. He is then corrected by a boy of Sakuno's age who is sitting in front of them and told him the difference of an Eastern grip from a Western grip. While Sakuno was waiting on the train station for her grandmother(they are going to see a tennis match), the same boy approaches her for directions to the tennis club tournament and mistakenly gave him the wrong directions.
As Sakuno arrives to the tennis club, she quickly looks for the boy and found him sleeping on the grasses with a cap covering his face. She apologizes but the boy's match was already forfeited because he was 5min late. She asks him for a drink but it turns out that she did not carry any coins with her. So the boy treats her a can Ponta instead.
They also met Sasabe again who then challenges the boy for a tennis match. But Ryoma seems to outplay him. Ryuzaki's grandmother then introduces him as Ryoma Echizen, a 12-year-old tennis genius who won four consecutive titles in the American Junior Tennis Tournament. But Sasabe was pissed off since he cannot accept that only a boy can beat him, he throws his racket to Ryoma and it hits its head.Sakuno tries to interfere in the game upon seeing Ryoma's bleeding head but he refuses. They continue the game as Ryoma tries to reveal that he's really left handed making Sasabe to run away.

002. Samurai Junior

002. Samurai Junior

Ryoma now enrolls at Seigaku Junior High School. He is going to enroll himself to the school's official tennis club. He meets Horio, who is also going to enroll at the said club and kepts on bragging to Ryoma about his two years of Tennis experience. They then meet two other first years, Kajiro and Katsuo, who infromed them that there will be no registration for new tennis club members for that day since the the tennis team is playing for a match. Just then they meet other 2nd year members, one is called Arai, who offers them a game of deal.
The game is they have to knock down an empty can(somewhat PONTA) and they'll get to win 10,000 yen. But there is a deal, they will have to pay first 5,000 yen so that they can play. So Horio, Kajiro, and Katsuo tried but they cannot knock the can down. So Arai and his pal obliges the three to pay instead. But that wasn't in the deal. Arai offers Ryoma the deal but instead he reveals why the can is hard to knock down. He serves the ball and hits it on the top of the can and it knocks down revealing the stones inside. He continues to hit the can in every serve and says to the senpais that if he hits the can 100 times in a row they'll have to pay him 10 million yen! Arai was mad at Ryoma but the commotion was interrupted as another 2nd year enters the court and orders the two to leave. Meanwhile, Sakuno also enters the tennis team and her friend, Tomoka, asked her why she got interested in Tennis all of a sudden. Their conversation was cut off by a female reporter, Shiba, who was asking the girls for the direction of the tennis court. The two girls guided her and shortly they were joined by another Tennis magazine reporter, Inoue. At the courts, Sakuno easily notices Ryoma who was then playing against Momoshiro Takeshi(the guy who interrupted their commotion with Arai). Momoshiro is a second year regular who heards about Ryoma from their coach, Sensei Riyuzaki, and how he can do the famous TWIST SERVE. They played tennis and Horio volunteered to be the umpire. Tomoka was amazed by Ryoma's moves and instantly became a Ryoma fan. At first, Ryoma serves using slices but Momoshiro urges him to do his Twist serve. So Ryoma finally reveals his famous serve. Momo and the others were stunned by the serve and could not believe that only a 12-yrs-old boy can do it. Inoue recognizes Ryoma's name and has this thought that he might be the son of the Echizen Nanjiro, a former tennis pro who garnered the name "Samurai" of the tennis courts. After a few more serves, Momoshiro slowly got the timing to counter the shots but only to reveal that Ryoma decides to use his left saying that it was only a warm-up. But Momoshiro quits and tells that he doesn't want to play anymore. Sensei Riyuzaki then tells him that if he hadn't have a foot injury, he might have won the game but Momo only replied "I don't think so". The others who witnessed the match was really amazed by Ryoma's move and Inoue tells them that Ryoma can be called Samurai Junior..making others confused. Sakuno and Tomoka congratulates Ryoma and the latter introduces herself as well as Sakuno. But to Sakuno's dismay, Ryoma has already forgotten who she is and only to remember her again when he's already on his way home.
